A team of my students produced an amazing live streaming event this week. Ofssa Wrestling asked us to live stream the event using 6 iPads using the ustream app. We also had access to the stadiums Tricaster, cameras, sound system to produce the main feed and capture interviews. To the students and volunteers this sporting event truly raised the bar! The talent, atheletisim, passion of the athelets and coaches put on a great show. Over the next few weeks more footage from the event will be posted online at http://ofsaawrestling.weebly.com/ so stay tuned.
Pro streaming tip - Monitor bandwidth
The biggest challenge was a lack of bandwidth. When streaming you need to try an ensure you have a stable connection with high upload speed. When using a mobile access point on a cel network can be great because it can provide Internet connection in remote areas. It is critical to test the connection at the location before the event. We did two site tests with mixed results.
This type of setup has limits, Broadcasting inside a stadium is not cel or wi-fi signal friendly. Also, monitor the connection as both Bell and Rogers monitor bandwidth. This results with the connection being blocked until you accept the additional charges. The tiers we had with Bell 100MB, 1 Gig, 2 Gig, 4 Gigs, 6 Gigs and 10 Gigs. So 3 times during the production we had to approve the overages.
What worked....
In the end we had 3 iPad streams which worked, 1 failed due to connection issues. We had 1 main feed from the stadiums Tricaster on a dedicated network. Students were tweeting from their schools around the province as the matches were happening . The iPad was a big part of bringing the action in schools and classrooms around the province.

We built a website to embed all of the streams.
Here is the ustream of the main feed http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/44590016
Here is an iPad stream from the match http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/44592636
So the iPad+Ustream+Tricaster created a transformation learning experience and I am so proud of my student crew!
Special Thanks to:
Congraduations to the steering committiee and a special shout out to Mr. Cappuccitti from Louise Arbour Secondary School who invited and was an executive producer of the broadcast. Also, his fellow convenor Rich Knill who was a huge supporter and help. Without their vision and the support of the entire Ofssa wrestling committiee, coaches, vounteers and students the event could not have taken flight with hundreds of viewers from around the province. I would also like to thank the administration at Louise Arbour Secondary for helping my students and I be part of such a remarkable event. To the talented AV crew, drama students and SHSM Arts and culture students job well done!
